Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Siemens Energy is set to play a pivotal role in Saudi Arabia’s energy transformation with the deployment of advanced gas power technologies for two major projects: Rumah 2 and Nairyah 2 gas-fired power plants. The projects, which will add 3.6 gigawatts of capacity to the Kingdom’s national grid, support the goals outlined in Vision 2030, particularly the shift from oil-based to cleaner gas-powered energy generation.

As part of a $1.6 billion contract, Siemens Energy will supply a comprehensive suite of equipment, including six SGT6-9000HL gas turbines, four SST6-5000 steam turbines, eight SGen6-3000W generators, and two SGen6-2000P generators. The SGT6-9000HL turbines are among the most efficient in the world, having set Guinness World Records for output and ramp rate performance.
The new facilities will replace aging oil-fired plants, improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions by up to 60%. The increased capacity will provide power to more than one million homes and ensure greater reliability and flexibility for the national grid.
The Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for both projects has been awarded to Harbin Electric International, with Siemens Energy contracted to deliver the generation equipment. Simple-cycle operations are expected to begin by 2027, followed by full combined-cycle functionality shortly thereafter.
A significant portion of the equipment will be manufactured at the Siemens Energy Dammam Hub, reinforcing the Kingdom’s localisation strategy and creating high-skilled employment opportunities for Saudi nationals. The agreement also includes technical advisory services and a 25-year long-term maintenance contract, ensuring operational reliability through predictive maintenance and local support teams.
The plants are also designed with future integration of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) in mind, allowing for further emissions reductions in line with Saudi Arabia’s net-zero target by 2060.
These strategic developments follow Siemens Energy’s recent projects in the region, including Taiba 2 and Qassim 2, further establishing the company as a leading provider of power solutions in the Middle East.
With a focus on innovation, efficiency, and sustainability, Siemens Energy continues to drive the region’s transition to a more diversified and resilient energy future.
